At the beginning of a ceremony there are always three questions. What is your name? Amarnath. What is your gothram? Nabella. What is your nakshatram? Rohini. Rohini is red, is alpha tauri. Nabella is another name for family. Amarnath is a cave in the Himalayas, is a piece of paper encased in gold around my neck, is the ice lingam which forms deep inside away from light, is the site of Indian, Kashmiri, and Pakistani strife, is a pilgrimage up a mountain never safe enough for my ascent. The steps that follow are repeated; a chant and the echo of that chant. Sound for sound. Even if I can’t pronounce the line or go too slow, I must throw flowers on the navagrahas for each one. They are my words, my sounds. They will fall from my mouth as well as my hands.
