He lays out nine brass vessels. The largest, surya, is in the middle, with the other eight in a square around it- chandra, ketu, rahu, shani, shukra, brihaspati, budha, mangala. His wife and his mother sleep in the back room, and the smell of the seashore, the odor of a thousand wet dogs, is absent. He applies three red kum kum lines, eyes, to each of the vessels, and fills them with rice. Earlier, his wife had drawn moogu with white rice flour on the floor, which spirals out from underneath the sun and the planets.
